YAS Newsletter T2 Week 6

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear families

As we find ourselves halfway through the term, it's a fitting time to pause and

review our progress so far. The first half of the term has been marked by numerous activities and events that have contributed to the growth and enrichment of our school community. This week we were thrilled to welcome Jessica Challinor, our new Inclusion Leader to the YAS family. Jessica comes to us with R-12 experience in the areas of disability, inclusion, complex behaviour, gifted education, and literacy development.

Our students have had the opportunity to participate in educational excursions, incursions and camps including Parliament House, the local museum, Youth Environment Summit, science presentations from Australian Science & Mathematics School, Vocational Education and Training presentations, Outdoor Education camps (and many more!) These opportunities broaden our students’ experiences and enhance their learning beyond the classroom by provided valuable hands-on learning experiences and fostered a deeper understanding of the subjects they study.

Our sporting heroes have also been shining brightly on the fields of competition during SAPSASA sports events. The dedication, teamwork displayed by our students have been exemplary, showcasing not just their athletic abilities but also their commitment to representing our school with pride and integrity. Their dedication and sportsmanship have been commendable, reflecting positively on our school values and community.

During Reconciliation Week, we had the opportunity to contemplate the significance of reconciliation with this year’s theme "Now More than Ever." This was explored through a range of classroom activities and discussions, culminating in the celebration of reconciliation with a donut drive (unfortunately, due to wet weather our fire pit and yarning circles were cancelled on the day). Our students gained a greater appreciation for the diversity within our community and the need for mutual respect and understanding and I thank our ATSI team for supporting staff and students.

Our recent Mother's Day coffee morning was a simple yet

meaningful gesture to honour the mothers, grandmothers, and

caregivers in our community. It was a time for us to express our gratitude for their support and contributions to our students' lives. It was lovely to connect with so many new faces and share a coffee while celebrating (and commiserating) on the joys of parenthood.

Our staff participated in our Student Free Day with enthusiasm. Middle and Secondary teachers were trained on how to use Daymap (our new Learner Management System) for curriculum delivery, feedback, and assessment. Our Primary teachers spent the day being trained in DIBELS (an oral reading fluency test and related teaching strategies) which is now mandated by the Department for Education.

As we continue through the remainder of the term and the weather becomes cooler, I remind families of our school uniform policy. Please ensure your children attend school in the YAS school uniform jumper and black pants. If any families are experiencing hardship and are unable to provide your children school uniform, please contact me for assistance.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our school community. As I continue our work in co-creating our future vision and strategic direction for YAS, I thank all parents and caregivers who have offered their invaluable feedback and opinions so far.

Introducing Jessica ChallinorInclusion Leader

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Inclusion Leader here at Yankalilla Area School and I am excited to embark on this journey alongside our dedicated staff, students, and families. As the Inclusion Leader, my goal is to foster an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and supported.

I am committed to collaborating with all key stakeholders to ensure that our school remains a place where diversity is celebrated and every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

I am eager to connect with each of you and to work together to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or concerns you may have.

Where are they now... class of 2023

SENIOR YEARS NEWS CONTINUEDYEAR 11-12 FOOD &HOSPITALITY

The students enjoyed a morning in the
vegetable patch learning about what is on offer
and how to plant vegetables. Students were also
taking note of what is available in preparation to
their next topic of ‘paddock to plate’ next term.

STUDENTS SEEK THE PERFECT MATCH

A big thank you to Michelle from mteSA Training organisation for engaging with Year 10-11
students today. Specializing in Traineeships and Apprenticeships, mteSA provided valuable
insights to the students. Michelle's discussion during National Career's Week covered postschool pathways and SBAT opportunities, offering students the chance for one-on-one
appointments to further explore their options.

YEAR 11 ENGLISH CLASSPRODUCES PUBLICATION

This year, our year 11 English Class have been working on
creating an anthology, which is a collection of published work. The theme we selected for our anthology was “A Night In New
York,” and we decided on this theme as a class because we
wanted some sort of place in common to unite our anthology
pieces. Our class was put into teams, and each was responsible for a
different part of the publication process. The teams were
Publishing, Marketing, Blurb/Introduction, Formatting and
Cover/Art Design. We invited submissions from other year levels
for both fiction and non-fiction pieces. The finished product will be published, printed and available
to purchase on amazon and in the front office at school. Hailey Nicholls

LOCAL CHURCHES HAVE OUR BACK!

Our local churches consistently back our
school community by offering various
services and support. They sponsor the YAS
Breakfast Club, provide hampers and meals to
families, and recently treated the YAS Staff to
a delightful lunch during their Professional
Development day.
The staff were thrilled with a home-made selection of five hot soups, a variety of
sandwiches, and sweet treats. This act of kindness not only nourished the hardworking
staff but also uplifted their spirits, and made them feel valued and cared for.We are grateful for the unwavering support of our community churches. Their dedicationand compassion are invaluable, and we look forward to continuing this partnership that enriches our school community in countless ways.

NATIONAL VOLUTEERS WEEK MORNING TEA CELEBRATION

Our volunteers' morning tea held last week as part
of National Volunteers Week is a heartfelt
celebration of the incredible dedication and hard
work our volunteers pour into our school
community.
These selfless individuals play a pivotal role in
shaping the experiences of our students and staff, contributing countless hours to ensure our school
thrives. Our Volunteer of the Year was awarded to
Jo Bailey. Since 2018, Jo has been the heart and

and students for their support of the canteen during term 1.
Additionally, we appreciate the fantastic support received on
sports day in week 11 of the previous term. It was a highly
successful day for the canteen.
The canteen menu has had some updates and changes to
warm our students bellies, now that the weather is getting
cooler. Our specials days have had some changes also.

YAS & HALLETT COVEINTERNATIONAL SCHOOLCONNECT: CELEBRATING IDENTITY & CULTURE

Yankalilla Area School has partnered with Hallett Cove International School to create a mural
that embodies the diverse identities and cultures of International students. As part of this
collaborative project, Hallet Cove students were invited to consider how they might express
their own identity and culture within a joint mural. The resulting ideas were woven into
the mural through symbolic imagery and
patterns that resonate with their personal
and cultural identity as well as reflecting their
experiences of the Yankalilla region from their
visits.
Some of the YAS Year 5/6 students at
Yankalilla have been working with Bu Ellin to
collate the ideas and create the mural. We hope
to have the mural completed by Week 8, when
Hallet Cove visits again and can add their final
touches to the artwork.

FROM THE YAS CHAPLAIN

After having a chat with one of our young people this past week,
they were saying how late they stay up ‘Tik Tocking’ and playing
games. No wonder it’s a struggle to get to school, let alone
concentrate. As our young people grow and develop, they need more time in
active play and opportunities to use their imagination. Less screen
time allows children to learn life lessons around respect, sharing,
taking turns, creative play, even how to hold a pencil, write stories
and colour in.
These things, they simply can’t learn from being glued to a screen. After all, our bodies aren’t designed to sit for long periods – we needto move and get a good dose of sleep each night to stay healthy.
If you think about it, we each get 24 hours in a day. It would be good, if we all were able to balance
8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours healthy play/activity.
Wholesome sleep is vital for recharging our mind, body and soul. It’s like fuel for your body. Most
of us know what it’s like if we let our car run out fuel. It’s not going anywhere! If we are wise and
want the best for our children, I encourage us all to lead by example, and find that balance.
